Bakuchiol: The Key to Age-Defying Beauty Ingredient

by Kass Care on Mar 27, 2024
Bakuchiol: The Key to Age-Defying Beauty Ingredient

Introduction

Retinoids have always had supremacy in the quest for younger-looking skin. Vitamin A-derived topicals are one of the best-studied anti-aging ingredients present in the market. But as most users know, retinoids are harsh on the skin leading to side effects like dryness, burning, stinging, peeling, and sun sensitivity. But amidst all this, bakuchiol, a botanical ingredient has gained popularity as a potential gentler alternative to retinoids.

Bakuchiol skincare products have been marketed with the proof that it has little to no irritation on the skin &  treat everything from premature aging to skin discoloration. But are they as good as retinoids? Or are they just trendy skincare ingredients with a unique name & different hype?

What is Bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is a naturally occurring compound derived from the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea corylifolia plant, also known as babchi. It is very high in Vitamin A, which is Retinoid & encapsulated in a biochemical form. Like Retinol, Bakuchiol’s has shown exact similar benefits to stimulate collagen production, promote cell turnover, and possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making it suitable for various skincare concerns such as aging, acne, hyperpigmentation, and sensitive skin.

How is it different from Retinol?

Bakuchiol and retinol are both skincare ingredients known for their anti-aging properties, they both are a powerful derivative of vitamin A, so what’s the difference?

While both have the exact same functions including helping reduce wrinkles, improve skin texture, and promote collagen production, bakuchiol, a natural retinol alternative, is gentler on the skin as compared to retinol.

In research that compares the effectiveness of retinol and bakuchiol, it was found that they have similar characteristics and produce the same results. However, the main difference lies in how they interact with the skin. Bakuchiol has skin-mimicking properties which means it closely resembles the structure of our skin. This similarity makes it less irritating and aggressive on the skin than retinol.

One significant advantage of bakuchiol is its ability to provide the same benefits as retinol without causing much irritation. This makes bakuchiol suitable for individuals with sensitive skin who may not tolerate retinol well. Additionally, bakuchiol is high in vitamin A, which contributes to its anti-aging properties.

How Does It Work?

Bakuchiol can alter several key processes within the skin, so, as a result, there is a significant improvement in skin health & appearance.

The first & foremost thing is that it stimulates collagen production which is liable for keeping skin’s elasticity & firmness in check. Bakuchiol can synthesize collagen which leads to minimization of the appearance of crow’s feet, wrinkles, and fine lines thereby tightening the skin and giving it a youthful look.

Furthermore, bakuchiol displays antioxidant ability and hence it protects our skin from the damage of free radicals & environmental stressors. These antioxidants can neutralize free radicals that prevent them from causing oxidative stress and premature aging of the skin.

In addition to this, bakuchiol is rich in anti-inflammatory compounds, which makes it a suitable ingredient for sensitive skin. It has the capacity to reduce inflammation, which helps to soothe and calm the skin, effectively easing redness, discomfort, and irritation.

Overall, bakuchiol's multifaceted approach to skincare makes it a highly effective ingredient. This makes bakuchiol a versatile and well-rounded option for individuals looking to improve the appearance and condition of their aging skin.

Benefits of Bakuchiol

1. Evens skin tone

Bakuchiol has antioxidant properties that are capable of neutralizing free radicals and decreasing oxidative stress in the skin. Free radicals may go so far as to induce the production of melanin which causes the appearance of dark patches on the facial skin complexion. On the other hand, bakuchiol, by decreasing oxidative stress, is beneficial in the modulation of the melanin concentration in the skin, resulting in a more even skin tone & complexion.

What cherry on the top is, that bakuchiol has shown to be an inhibitor of the tyrosinase enzyme – the one responsible for melanin production. So, that additional feature provides the product with enhanced efficiency guaranteeing the disappearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation, making the complexion lighter and, thus, it is easier to observe the brighter and smoother complexion.

2. Reduces the appearance of fine lines & Wrinkles

As retinol, Bakuchiol for wrinkles & fine lines acts similarly by stimulating collagen production & promoting cell regeneration which is important for the smooth skin from reduction of fine lines & wrinkles. It sends a signal to the skin cells to produce more collagen which then go on to create a "plumping" effect on the skin. Likewise, it also increases the rate of cell turnover, so that in the end new, healthy skin cells can gradually substitute for the old, damaged ones. Through this procedure, it helps to improve skin texture and minimize the appearance of wrinkles over time.

3. Doesn't cause dryness or irritation

Like every other ingredient used in skincare, retinol or any other might cause dryness or irritation to the skin. Hence, bakuchiol is milder and has little to no irritation as its counterparts. In this way, it is a great plus point because it not only repairs the skin's health but also prevents moisture loss from the inside out. The reason for this is the fact that bakuchiol has anti-inflammatory and skin-optimizing properties that lead to the balancing of moisture in the skin.

4. Suitable for Sensitive skin

Is Bakuchiol safe for sensitive skin? Definitely Yes!

All of the properties of Bakuchiol including its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties make it suitable for sensitive skin as it is gentle and non-irritating. Unlike retinol, bakuchiol does not cause the same level of sensitivity or irritation and helps to calm the skin, making it well-tolerated even by those with sensitive skin types. Additionally, bakuchiol can mimic the skin's structure which allows for effective yet gentle rejuvenation, making it a preferred option for sensitive skin.

Ideal Way to Use Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol has the upper hand as it has no contraindications. It is a gentle option for sensitive skin as it is a non-photosensitizing one as well. Hence, it can effectively blend well into an individual's skincare program and it can be used both in the morning and evening.

A unique combination of Retinol & Bakuchiol which is generally not found in the market but has been clinically tested & approved to be extremely efficient while using a lesser percentage of Retinol & a higher percentage of Bakuchiol. This combination provides you with the benefits of Retinoids holistically & takes away the disadvantages of harsh retinol.

Note: The concentration at which Bakuchiol's effectiveness has been scientifically confirmed ranges from 0.5% to 1%.

It is most ideal to be used in serums to fight wrinkles & fade blemishes as it has a good penetrative functionality in the skin. Bakuchiol similarly can be discovered in some night-time or day-time moisturizers but it is important to note that compared to serums, moisturizers typically have lower penetrative functionality. The primary reason a moisturizer is formulated is to provide protection & moisture.

Bakuchiol is also widely used in eye area care products. It comes in handy to alleviate lines and wrinkles in the eye area as the facial muscles in the corner of the eye area are thinner and work constantly when you make facial expressions that result in more defined wrinkles known as crow’s feet.

There have been no known side effects with using bakuchiol till now. Hence, it can be incorporated into both day and night skincare regimens.

However, it is always best to consult your dermatologist before using any new ingredient in your skincare routine

Can Bakuchiol Be Combined with Other Ingredients?

Bakuchiol pairs well with several other skincare ingredients, such as:

  • Niacinamide: For calming redness and enhancing skin barrier function.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: To provide hydration and plumpness.
  • Vitamin C: To brighten skin and increase antioxidant protection.

However, it’s best to avoid mixing Bakuchiol with strong exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), which can increase irritation.

Who should use it?

  1. People: 20+ years
  2. Who notice,
  • Wrinkles- Since, bakuchiol is helping fibroblast and rebuild elasticity, there will be smoothening of wrinkles & fine lines.
  • Sagging Skin- Through the syntesization of collagen production, Bhakuchiol leads to an improvement in skin firmness with a reduction of sagging.
  • Dark Spots: Bakuchiol's antioxidant properties help diminish the appearance of dark spots by inhibiting melanin overproduction.
  • Uneven Skin Tone & Texture: Bakuchiol promotes cell turnover and regulates melanin production, leading to a more even skin tone and smoother texture.
      3. Anyone looking to restore youthful skin & radiance

#Suitable for Sensitive Skin.

Precautions

During the day, finish your skincare routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater. Using Bakuchiol is stable in sunlight and isn't known to make skin more sun-sensitive but, as with any anti-aging ingredient, daily UV protection is essential to getting (and keeping) the best results.

Conclusion

As we place one foot ahead of the other in the direction of tomorrow, our way of treating aging is actively changing as well. By the power of knowledge and creativity, we are now writing new chapters to the story of aging. It is not about ignoring aging but rather welcoming it with energy and elegance. With every skincare choice we make, we invest in our future selves, embracing the journey with confidence and resilience. Together, let's #AgeBetter and celebrate the beauty of every stage of life.
